A Gathering Of Secrets: Kate Burkholder Series

Book 10 of the Kate Burkholder Series

Anytime I read a book in this series I’m never disappointed. Linda Castillo is always pushing the edge, making you wonder if this time Chief Kate Burkholder will be outsmarted. Thankfully she has the unyielding support of her officers and secret boyfriend who works for the BSU.

The only slightly annoying part of the books is the fact that Castillo has to slip in how Kate used to be Amish. After a horrifying attack when she was in her teens and her retaliation she could not accept the Amish life and the Amish couldn’t accept her as one of their own. She is now police chief in her in Painters Mill and the connected Amish community.

So let’s get to this book review. One of the few times you hope the murderers get away with it. Daniel Gingerich was tricked into the barn, then locked in as the barn was set ablaze. He suffered a slow and and agonizing death. As Kate begins to investigate who would kill an Amish teen she soon realizes  this is more than what it seems.

As she investigates she hits dead ends as the Amish refuse to share any information that will lead to shame on their own selves or community. You soon realize that Daniel was killed for both retaliation and protection.

Have you read this book? What are your thoughts? Did you want the murderers to get away with it as well?

Daniel Gringerich is a pathological sexual deviant that just happens to be Amish. Since he lives in the Amish community his victims will never speak up, the few who do are told that is their fault for enticing him. One of his victims committed suicide after she became pregnant from his attack on her. She had told her mom, but in true Amish style the mother said it was her own fault for enticing him Another Amish man shot his wife, killed himself, and left his infant son to fend for himself rather than face the truth., As an Amish man he couldn't stand that his wife was rushed to marry him to hide her rape and pregnancy by Daniel. Don't worry, Kate found the infant and he was sent to live with his grandparents.

So, who killed Daniel. The Amish girls take matters into their own hands after their friend, the one who killed herself, suffered from Daniel. One of them was his next target and they had to stop him. A mother of one of the girls tries to trick and kill Kate to take suspicion off the girls. Sadly the truth comes out, since the Amish don't realize all the evidence left by crimes. They are arrested and will be prosecuted. I wanted these girls to get away with Daniel’s murder. He deserved the excruciating death he got. His death should NOT have been vindicated or given justice. These three Amish girls, did what no one else was willing to do

Kate is tormented by having to arrest these girls, as she murdered her own rapist as a teen. Though she can draw a line between the two. She murdered her attacker in the moment, these girls plotted and planned the almost perfect murder. Too bad the investigator is an "Englisher" and wouldn't look the other way.
